Lip Balm vs. Lip Masks – What Is the Difference?

When we think of skincare, the first thing that often comes to mind is everything to do with face products. Be it serums, toners, moisturizers, undereye creams, or SPF. But what about taking care of your lips?

Keep reading below for the best know-how on using lip balms and lip masks for plump, supple lips all year around.

What do our lips need?

One of the most important things when it comes to looking after your lips is assessing what products you are currently using to target hydration specifically, and if you are still waiting to do something in particular, then there is no time like the present to begin.

You might be surprised to hear that the skin on our lips and under the eyes are two of the thinnest skin you will find anywhere on your body. Previously, you might have thought that you only need to keep lip care products in your bag during winter, but this is an all-year-round job.

Hydration

As a general goal, you should aim for your lips to stay hydrated as much as possible, and the best part about this is that it is straightforward to tell when they are not. If your lips often feel chapped, it can lead to cracked lips, and you might even experience a tingly burning sensation, which is not only painful but also means that any other lip products you apply that are makeup-related will not sit nicely and will be uncomfortable.

Need more lip balm?

We have all experienced this at some point in our lives – applying too much lip balm because our lips have been particularly dry and we're looking for relief, but two minutes after applying, they begin to feel the same. There can be a combination of reasons for that. One might be that your lips have been dehydrated for a while, so the usual amount of lip balm will not do the trick, and you will need something more long-lasting than your regular chapstick.

What does a lip balm do?

It seems simple enough, but what does our everyday trusty lip balm do?

Well, lip balms are a great on-the-go option where your lips feel slightly dried out from the weather, the environment, or something you've eaten. Similar to a moisturizer in some ways, lip balms will usually sink into the lips, and the moisture will lock in about an hour or two after application. Once locked in, it prevents moisture from escaping the top layer of your lips, helping them feel plump and smooth for a good couple of hours.

What sort of lip balms exist?

As you may already be aware, there is an incredible variety of lip balms to choose from, which can be tailored entirely according to your personal preferences, meaning the only problem you'll run into, is that you'll want to get them all!

You may choose lip balms depending on the season during the year – perhaps in the winter, you favor a lip balm that is slightly thicker in texture as the moisturizing element lasts longer.

In the summer, you may want a lip balm with a light tint to it, so even on the no-makeup days, your lips still have a pop of color to make you look refreshed and rejuvenated. If you loved Sofia Richie's wedding look, you will be delighted to know that thanks to tinted lip balms, you could recreate some of your favorite celebrity lip combos with minimal effort.

There are even a variety of delicious scents for you to choose from, and you can get your hands on everything from watermelon to caramel and even mango.

What does a lip mask do?

In the incredible world of lip products, it can sometimes be hard to keep up with all the different types of products available. Lip masks, in particular, are a fantastic product. Lip masks work similarly to face masks, which are thicker in texture and are designed to work for longer hours, usually overnight, so that you wake up with soft and supple lips.

If you suffer especially from chapped and dry lips, you might even want to use lip masks during the day and the night to help your lips appear fuller and plumper and feel that way too.

We would recommend you apply a lip mask at night before you go to sleep, and the extra thick layer can work its magic overnight while you rest and recharge, helping you wake up with lips that feel hydrated and soft to the touch.
